Sunday, March 7 2010, 2:00pm - 4:00pm

[For some reason we are unable to link a map to the address but we found the address in Google Maps...bear with us while we sort out the problem]
We will meet at 5767 Jewell Road, Saxapahaw, NC for our March First Sunday Hike.  We'll visit two mill sites on Marys Creek and an old school site nearby.  As usual, we will depart from the trailhead at 2 PM and be back there by 4 PM.  Arrive early enough to sign in and pick up whatever maps we'll prepare.

These mills are interesting in and of themselves, but more to the point, one or both of these crossings may carry what Collet (1770) referred to as the Western Trading Path and which we generally refer to as the Lower Trading Path.  Crossing the Haw at either Cedar Cliffs or Saxapahaw, traffic headed west would have had to go around the Cane Creek Mountains west of Marys Creek.  The most likely course from Cedar Cliff or Saxapahaw fords would have been around the south end of Bass Mountain the eastern most of the Cane Creek Mountains.

Given the time of the year, in a couple of places we will disperse into the woods to look for blooming bulbs.

Kids are welcome, but no dogs as this hike is entirely on private land.
